
In the mid-1990s, a group of anti-government farmers and ranchers in Montana, known as the Freemen, declared themselves sovereign and independent from the United States government. Fueled by financial desperation and a belief in their own legal system, they engaged in a long-standing armed standoff with federal authorities.
