In the final months of the second world war, the Canadian army launched a massive offensive into the German Rhineland. The operation, known as Operation Blockbuster, saw Canadian forces fighting through the mud and forests of the Hochwald Gap, a heavily defended area that served as a critical defensive line for the German army. The battle was characterized by intense tank warfare, with Canadian Sherman tanks facing off against German Panther and Tiger tanks, as well as the deadly Panzerfaust anti-tank weapon. The fighting was brutal and costly, with both sides suffering heavy casualties as they struggled for control of the strategic terrain.
