In 1954, the Central Intelligence Agency orchestrated a covert operation, codenamed Operation PBSUCCESS, to overthrow the democratically elected government of Guatemala. Fearing the spread of communism in the Western Hemisphere, the United States government, led by President Dwight D. Eisenhower, authorized the CIA to destabilize the regime of President Jacobo Árbenz Guzmán. The operation utilized psychological warfare, including a clandestine radio station, to create the illusion of a massive rebel uprising, ultimately leading to the collapse of the Árbenz government and the installation of a new regime.
