At the end of World War II, women in defeated countries were often subjected to horrific sexual violence by occupying troops. German women were especially targeted, with an estimated 100,000 to 200,000 raped by Soviet soldiers alone. In East Prussia, up to 90% of women were raped, and many were murdered or committed suicide. The scale and brutality of the sexual violence against women in the aftermath of World War II was unprecedented in modern history, and it left a lasting legacy of trauma and suffering.
