Francisco Franco, the absolute ruler of Spain, was one of the most enigmatic dictators in European history. Even today, the country still bears the scars of his reign. In a bitter civil war, the general seized power and resolutely clung to it. After his death, Spain suffered from Franco's dark legacy, and still does today.
