Travelling With the JINJU
In the remote, rural landscapes of northern China, a traveling opera troupe keeps an ancient tradition alive, performing for small, isolated communities that rarely see such spectacles. These performers, who live a nomadic life on the road, are seen as both entertainers and spiritual conduits, their performances serving as offerings to local gods. As they travel from village to village, the troupe members, including the youngest performer, Ping Li, navigate the challenges of their demanding profession, balancing the physical and emotional toll of their work with the deep, personal connections they form with the people they perform for. The film captures the essence of their lives, from the meticulous preparation of their elaborate costumes and makeup to the powerful, emotional performances that transport their audiences to the world of imperial China, offering a glimpse into a world that is both timeless and fleeting.
