Heroes on Deck: World War II on Lake Michigan
During the height of World War II, the U.S. Navy faced a critical shortage of carrier-qualified pilots. To address this, they launched an ambitious and unconventional training program on the waters of Lake Michigan, converting passenger steamships into makeshift aircraft carriers. Thousands of young, inexperienced pilots were tasked with mastering the dangerous art of carrier landings and takeoffs under the watchful eyes of seasoned instructors. This high-stakes operation, conducted in the challenging and often unpredictable conditions of the Great Lakes, became a crucible for the pilots who would eventually turn the tide of the war in the Pacific.
