During the second world war, the British Special Operations Executive launched a series of covert missions into German-occupied Holland, only to find their agents falling into a sophisticated trap set by the German counter-intelligence service. As the British continued to send more agents into the field, they remained unaware that their entire network had been compromised, leading to the capture and death of dozens of operatives in a catastrophic intelligence failure known as the Englandspiel.
