In the early 20th century, German photographer Robert Lohmeyer traveled to the German colonies in Africa, capturing the first color photographs of the continent and its people. These images were used to promote German colonialism, portraying the colonies as idyllic, prosperous, and well-managed, while simultaneously reinforcing racist stereotypes and justifying the exploitation of the indigenous population. Today, these photographs continue to circulate online, often without context, perpetuating the colonial and racist narratives they were originally designed to promote.
