In the summer of 1985, the Greenpeace flagship Rainbow Warrior was docked in Auckland, New Zealand, preparing for a voyage to protest nuclear testing in the Pacific. The mission was cut short when the vessel was bombed by French secret service agents, resulting in the death of photographer Fernando Pereira. The subsequent investigation exposed a state-sponsored conspiracy, leading to a diplomatic crisis and the eventual sinking of the ship in Matauri Bay, where it remains as a memorial to the fight against nuclear proliferation.
