
In the remote mountains of China, the Mosuo people maintain a unique, matrilineal society where women hold the power and pass down property to their daughters. The film follows two young sisters, Erchema and Zuoma Lakuo, as they navigate the transition from childhood to adulthood, balancing their traditional responsibilities with the desire for education and a life beyond their isolated village. As they approach their thirteenth birthdays, their family must decide whether they will remain in the village to uphold their cultural heritage or pursue their dreams of schooling in the town, a choice that will shape their futures and the future of their community.
