Claus von Stauffenberg, a German aristocrat and military officer, played a pivotal role in the failed July 20, 1944 attempt to assassinate Adolf Hitler and overthrow the Nazi regime. A highly decorated World War II veteran, Stauffenberg suffered severe injuries in North Africa and became disillusioned with the Nazi leadership. He joined a conspiracy of military officers, intellectuals, and politicians who sought to end the war and establish a democratic government in Germany. On July 20th, Stauffenberg planted a bomb in Hitler's East Prussian headquarters, but Hitler miraculously survived. Stauffenberg was captured and executed, along with many other conspirators, in the aftermath of the failed coup attempt, known as Operation Valkyrie. His actions cemented his legacy as a symbol of German resistance to Nazi tyranny.
