Mukanda

In the remote reaches of western Zambia, the Luvale people are fighting to preserve their ancient and unique culture. At the heart of this struggle is the Mukanda, a four-month-long initiation ceremony for young boys that serves as a rite of passage into manhood. During this time, the initiates are separated from their families and live in seclusion, where they are taught the traditions of their people. The ceremony is a complex and deeply symbolic event, involving the creation of elaborate costumes and masks, and the participation of the entire community. The Mukanda is a testament to the resilience of the Luvale people and their commitment to passing on their heritage to future generations.
