Kabuki, the Path of the Flowers

Kabuki is a classical Japanese dance-drama. It is known for its elaborate costumes, flamboyant music, and exaggerated acting style. The word Kabuki originally meant "out of the ordinary" or "bizarre". It developed in the early 17th century from a form of dance performed by women, but women were later banned from Kabuki and all roles were played by men, including the female parts, which were played by highly specialized "onnagata" actors. The plays and stories encompass history, morality tales, love stories, and current events. Kabuki is renowned for its dramatic makeup, lavish costumes, grand stage sets, and energetic performances.
