King George I, born as Georg Ludwig von Hannover, was the first British monarch of the House of Hanover. After the death of Queen Anne, who had no surviving children, George I ascended to the throne in 1714 under the Act of Settlement. The House of Hanover was a German royal house that originated in the Duchy of Brunswick-Lüneburg. George's accession marked the beginning of a new era in British history, as it shifted the focus of power away from the traditional aristocratic elite and towards a more modern, Hanoverian-led monarchy. George's rule was characterized by a focus on stability and peace, as well as the establishment of the first permanent standing army in Britain.
