Edward II, King of England from 1307 to 1327, is often labeled as one of England's worst monarchs. His inept leadership, favoritism towards favorites, and failure to control his nobles led to widespread discontent. Edward's weakness and incompetence in military matters culminated in the humiliating defeat at Bannockburn in 1314, which dealt a significant blow to English prestige. His inability to maintain order and justice resulted in widespread lawlessness and a decline in royal authority. Edward's relationship with his influential lover, Piers Gaveston, alienated many barons, who eventually orchestrated the favorite's execution. These factors, combined with a general perception of weakness and a lack of respect for the monarchy, ultimately led to Edward's downfall and deposition in a coup led by his wife, Isabella of France, and her lover, Roger Mortimer.
