Damnation: The Problem With Hydropower

Hydropower, often touted as a clean energy source, has a hidden downside: dam construction can lead to widespread environmental damage and social upheaval. Damming rivers disrupts natural water flows, altering fish migration, affecting downstream ecosystems, and increasing the risk of downstream flooding. The creation of reservoirs inundates vast areas of land, displacing indigenous communities, destroying cultural heritage, and contributing to greenhouse gas emissions through methane production. Moreover, the displacement of populations, disruption of livelihoods, and loss of cultural identity can have devastating social consequences. These concerns raise fundamental questions about the morality of hydropower development and the need for a more holistic approach to energy production that considers the environmental and social costs of various energy options.
