Several Nazi war criminals managed to escape justice after World War II, and their whereabouts remained a mystery for decades. One of the most notorious was Adolf Eichmann, the architect of the Final Solution, who fled to Argentina after the war. He lived there under an alias until he was captured by Israeli agents in 1960 and brought to trial in Jerusalem. Eichmann was found guilty of crimes against humanity and sentenced to death, and he was executed in 1962. Josef Mengele, the infamous doctor who conducted horrific experiments on concentration camp inmates, also managed to escape to South America after the war. He lived in hiding for many years, moving from country to country to avoid capture. Mengele died in Brazil in 1979, and his remains were not identified until 1985. While some Nazi war criminals were brought to justice, many others were never held accountable for their crimes. The pursuit of these fugitives continued for decades, and even today, new information about their whereabouts and activities is still emerging.
